sound journey #3

I went to the closest wetland to the city but close to nature during the week. There are all kinds of animals and plants in it, and I found a lot of interesting sounds over there too. I heard a lot of insects in the bushes, and I found it interesting that I felt that these insects were really playing music, and their calls were very rhythmic in my opinion. And it was amazing that in a small area of the grass, when I got close to the grass, the insects didn’t call, but when I stepped back to one meter, they started calling again.

Playing in such a quiet and natural environment, the noise from the construction area outside the park broke the peace. So it’s also very much like the anger and rage I feel on a nice weekend when I’m sleeping and being woken up by the renovation upstairs or the noise from outside the house. So I also tried to record some noise that would affect sleep, and finally one day the sound of a lawn mower working in the neighborhood was perfect for this sound.

I continued the field recording in another area of the wetland, and I chose a place by the river, opposite an island-like area filled with various bird calls, but that area was not accessible to tourists.

During the hour, I could hear the birds chirping from more to less, so I guessed that maybe they had changed to a different area to rest, or the sound of a plane crossing the sky during that time had startled them.

At the end I also went to a location that was a bird watching pavilion. Maybe I went too late, so there weren’t a lot of birds to see. But there were sound dynamics happening during this time, such as the plopping sound of fish in the water swooping to the water to eat insects, the sound of water birds gliding through the water like gliders, and the call of two birds swimming in the water during this time.

Another field recording I made this week was on my balcony. I placed the recorder on the balcony around 8pm and planned to record all night so that I could clearly hear the sound dynamics and possibly some of the clips I could use in my project. Since I thought my theme was dreams, I thought I would try to record some night or midnight sounds. But unfortunately, I woke up in the morning to find that my recorder had turned itself off, so I probably only got about 6 hours of recording in. But I can hear the sound dynamics too.

From 8pm to 9pm, the neighborhood I live in is very busy with people walking after dinner. So at this time the decibel is relatively large. But after that, there are fewer people walking, so the decibel slowly decreases, only the sound of some vehicles driving across the road. At almost 11 pm, I could hear the sound of a sports car rubbing the ground, because there is a big club near my place, so these sounds are also very normal. After midnight, the whole neighborhood sounded almost quiet, except for the sound of the wind that day. I could only hear the chirping of some insects. At the beginning of 1:00 am, there were some birds started calling, but that was not loud.

By the way, I found a very interesting area the day I was in the wetlands, that area was called the underwater forest, this place was built underwater and surrounded by a glass enclosure so I could see some fish swimming in the water, which was interesting. I could probably use the contact mic to press against that glass and listen to the sounds inside.
